George Lucas Interview Star Wars Episode 2
Star Wars Episode 2 -- What is the secret meaning of Star Wars Episode 2 Attack of the Clones?
George Lucas -- It's really about how the will of the Force ultimately controls what happens in the Star Wars galaxy.
Star Wars Episode 2 -- What examples of this do you have?
George Lucas -- For instance, certain villains are attempting to kill Padme Amidala during Attack of the Clones, but they can't succeed because the will of the Force has already determined Padme must give birth to the Skywalker twins before she can die.
Star Wars Episode 2 -- Why didn't the Jedi Order somehow figure out a way to free Shmi Skywalker from slavery? Shmi and Qui-Gon Jinn were probably the only Star Wars characters, who could thwart Anakin Skywalker turning to the dark side of the Force.
George Lucas -- The Jedi Code really undermines the future of the Jedi. Anakin can't have attachments to people or possessions under the ancient Jedi Code. In fact, this Jedi belief system is primarily responsible for the collapse of the Old Republic and the extinction of most of the Jedi.
Star Wars Episode 2 -- Was the Jedi Code in opposition to the will of the Force?
George Lucas -- Yes, the Jedi didn't understand the reality underpinnings of the Force. Yoda, Mace Windu and the other Jedi couldn't comprehend that the Force is unknowable and certainly unfathomable. The Force never provided direct revelation to the Jedi about the secrets of the will of the Force.
Star Wars Episode 2 -- How did the Jedi Knights protect the Star Wars galaxy for a thousand generations if they were acting contrary to the will of the Force?
George Lucas -- You have to understand that the Force is eternal. It has always existed and it will always exist. The will of the Force can unfold over millions or billions of eons. A thousand generations of mortals is only a brief second from the perspective of the Force.
Star Wars Episode 2 -- Did Darth Sidious Palpatine orchestrate the Clone Wars specifically to destroy both the Old Republic and the Jedi?
George Lucas -- This is never revealed in the movies, but the Sith have been conspiring for centuries and planning for a long time to establish a Sith Empire across the galaxy. Darth Sidious was the first Sith Master, who figured out a way to actually unfold the Sith conspiracy in the open. He basically took control as Supreme Chancellor and secretly controlled the Galactic Senate and even the Galactic Courts. Darth Sidious was the greatest political and military genius in the history of the galaxy.
Star Wars Episode 2 -- So the will of the Force wanted to destroy civilization and freedom across the entire galaxy for what possible motive or purpose?
George Lucas -- What this reveals about the true nature of reality is that the Force doesn't have to explain or justify its actions. The Force can do whatever it wants and there's nothing the Jedi or any mortal can do about it. Not ever. The will of the Force may seem draconian or unresponsive to the needs of its followers. However, what this exemplifies is that you can't underestimate the power of the dark side. The Sith outsmarted the Jedi in every conceivable way.
Star Wars Episode 2 -- Does this mean the dark side is equal or even more powerful than the light side of the Force?
George Lucas -- Not in the end. Luke Skywalker eventually permanently defeats the dark side and brings balance to the Force for the rest of eternity. In the end, the dark side is weak and the will of the Force finally brought Heaven to the galaxy. The collapse of civilization was needed in order to inspire Luke to destroy the dark side. Luke realized the dark side must be destroyed or else the galaxy would always be at the mercy of evil. The annihilation of the Old Republic and Jedi were needed in order to unleash an unending golden age for the whole galaxy, which never ends.

George Lucas -- Star Wars is a mythological story, which has been told since the dawn of time. I didn't create the myth. Instead, I just updated it for modern times.

George Lucas -- You're welcome.
